“Image of Chile” Speech, 1963
“If we are really serious about communicating with one another, about knowing ourselves through our neighbors — in short, about peaceful civilization — then we can never overestimate the good that comes from artistic communication. When we touch one another through music, we are touching the heart, the mind, and the spirit, all at once.”
And that is why we sing. That is why choir is so important. That is why choir makes a difference in our lives and the lives of others!
DJ Johnston medaled in 5th place in the Bass Voice Division of OSAA State Solo Music Competition today, held at Mountainside High School. BRAVO!!!!!
Micah Hering medaled in 5th place in the Baritone Voice Division of OSAA State Solo Competition today as well! BRAVO!!!!
Congratulations to both of these fine singers and outstanding human beings! So Proud!!!
After a wonderful audition evening on Thursday, April 28th, an evening full of great singing and the promise of raising the standard for musicianship for the coming year, I am pleased to announce the new membership for the Tigard High School Concert Choir.

Membership is conditional to students finishing the year strong in this year’s classes and choirs. Students must demonstrate outstanding behavior, outstanding attendance in their daily classes and pass all of their classes. This is an OSAA governed class requiring the very best in sportsmanship, scholarship, personal behavior and attendance. Failure to keep the standard will result in removal from membership in the Concert Choir for next year.
Do not boast about your accomplishment, especially among other choir members who are not moving into Concert Choir for next year.
I look forward to an outstanding year of music making, community building and learning!
Choralation placed 3rd in State Chamber Choir competition on Friday, April 29th. Held at Mt. Hood Community College, the Choir sang beautifully with expression, skill and refined technique! After a celebration at Baskin-Robbins for Ice Cream, we returned to Tigard HS. Shortly after, we received the news of the successful day.
Congratulations and a job well done!!!
Concert Choir Auditions will be held on Thursday, April 28th at 7-9 pm in the THS Choir Room. Your presence is mandatory.
Students must swing by the choir room to pick up a copy of the music being used for the audition. The piece is April is in my Mistress Face, a Renaissance Madrigal in four parts. You will be asked to learn your part, Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass. It does not need to be memorized. It does need to be learned. Come in during any lunch if you need help.
Rehearsal Tracks and a performance of the piece are available under the CONCERT CHOIR AUDITION tab on the website.
HOW DOES THE AUDITION WORK?
I will be looking for students who listen as they sing, well-focused, earnest students who like to sing and have a positive attitude. Students are motivated and self-starters.
1. You will stand in your assigned section for the warm-up.
2. We will rehearse April is in my Mistress Face. Not to learn parts, but to begin lifting it to the next level of musicianship. Students are expected to know their part. (come in during lunch for help if you need it. Use the learning tracks on the website! Be resourceful!)
3. With pencil in hand, we will make adjustments to our sound until it sounds the way we want it to sound.
4. I will listen to individual sections, voice them and then put the whole group back together.
5. Then I will listen to smaller groupings in four parts, perhaps 8-12 at a time.
Members selected into Concert Choir will be posted on this website by student number on May 1st. Those not making it into Concert Choir will be invited to join Camerata or Cantus for the coming year.
I am thrilled to welcome all of you back to singing at Tigard High School! It has been a wild ride these past years, but we are coming back live and in person!
Our plans for the year will evolve as information becomes more clear, but this website is a great spot to get up-to-date information about the choir program.
The first BIG thing to announce is the collaboration set for this Fall with our Theater Program. Under the new direction of Mrs. Tori Scoles, the Choir Program and Theater Program will join forces to present, “All Together Now!” a musical review from Music Theater International. Our event dates are Thursday, November 11 and Saturday, November 13! All the choirs will be involved. This is in place of our Fall Debut Concert.
I am also pleased to announce that the talented Mr. Ulises Zavaleta-Berdeja will be joining us from the PSU Music Education Program as a student teacher! For those of you who participated in the choir program in 2019-2020 school year, you will remember his skilled involvement in rehearsals and sectionals. Welcome Mr. Zavaleta-Berdeja!
Check out the website for your performance calendar and other information that is handy!
Looking forward to a great year!
Mr. Robert Hawthorne
Director, Tigard Choir Program
